A healthy nursery starts with careful selection of everything that goes into the room

A thoughtful guide to baby essentials, nursery materials and the indoor environment your little one will grow up in.

Preparing for a baby can turn into a surprisingly long shopping list. A cot, mattress, pram, carrier, change table, bottles, bedding, play mat… and suddenly you're comparing dozens of products, each promising to be the best.

But when I think about a healthier start for a baby, I look beyond the registry. I think about the air in the room, the finishes on the furniture, the materials in the mattress and the products used every day.

As a healthy home designer, WELL Accredited Professional and mum, my approach is to start with the essentials, ask better questions and choose with intention. You don't need to buy everything at once.

Before you fill your registry, give yourself a clearer starting point.

My Healthy Nursery E-Books help you work through the choices that make up your baby's room, with practical guidance and Australian supplier recommendations.

Start with the room, then the shopping list

A nursery often brings several new purchases into one small space. Some paints, adhesives and furnishings can release volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, into indoor air. Choosing lower-emission products and providing ventilation helps address these sources.1

This is why I encourage parents to consider where the baby will sleep before choosing the decorative details. That might be a space in your bedroom initially, rather than a separate nursery.

Ask yourself: does the room have fresh air? Is there dampness that needs investigating? Are you planning to paint or replace flooring? Which purchases are essential now, and which can wait?

Getting these decisions in order gives your registry a purpose.

Put the cot and mattress first

I would start here because the mattress is such an important part of your baby's sleep environment.

First, follow current safe sleep guidance: choose a safe cot, a firm, flat mattress that fits correctly, and appropriate bedding. Red Nose recommends keeping pillows, cot bumpers and other soft items out of baby's sleep space.2

Then look more closely at the materials. What is inside the mattress? What is the cover made from? What treatments have been applied? Is there independent testing to support the manufacturer's claims?

A reassuring name or an “eco” label isn't enough information to make that decision. My Healthy Nursery E-Book walks you through mattress choices, bedding and the certifications worth understanding.

Choose furniture you can understand

A dresser might look like timber on the outside while being made from several different materials underneath. Ask about the whole piece: the frame, drawer bases, backing, glues and surface finish.

My preference is for simple, durable furniture with transparent material information. I also like pieces that can stay useful as your child grows, such as a dresser that works beyond the baby years.

Rather than adding a matching set automatically, consider what you actually need. Fewer well-chosen pieces can make a nursery easier to use, clean and adapt.

Keep fabrics and everyday essentials simple

For sheets, clothing and washable textiles, look for clear fibre information, practical care instructions and credible certification. Ask what a certification covers, rather than assuming it applies to every part of the product.

You can take the same approach to bottles, carriers, bath products, toys and play mats: check the materials, intended use, age suitability and cleaning requirements.

When a product will touch a baby's skin or go into their mouth, those details deserve attention. A shorter registry also makes it easier for family and friends to buy the specific items you've chosen.

Include the air in your nursery plans

Air quality rarely appears on a baby registry, but it belongs in the conversation. Think about ventilation, fragrance use, cleaning routines and any moisture problems before adding another decorative accessory.

If you are buying an air purifier, check its suitability for the room and what its filters are designed to remove. It should support a plan that also addresses pollutant sources and fresh air.1

At Haven, I look at the indoor environment as a whole. The mattress, furniture, finishes and air all belong to the same space.

Renovating? Make your material choices early

If you are repainting, replacing carpet or building a nursery, your decisions begin before the furniture arrives.

Flooring, underlay, adhesives, sealants and wall materials are worth discussing while you can still specify alternatives. Ask your trades for product details before ordering, and plan time for works, cleaning and ventilation.

This is where my Healthy Nursery + Renovation E-Book comes in. It includes the Essentials content plus guidance on building materials, flooring, adhesives and the renovation process.

A clearer plan before you buy

You don't need to become an expert in every baby product. You need a way to decide what matters, understand the information in front of you and choose the next step.

I created these guides to help you move from endless tabs and competing claims to a practical plan for your baby's room.
