Water filters I recommend in Australia

Water is one of the foundations of a healthy home. We drink it, cook with it and use it to bathe, yet the water reaching our taps can vary with its source, treatment and the plumbing in our homes.

Bathrooms are also places that contain water contaminants

A well-chosen filter can improve taste and reduce specific contaminants, but no single system does everything. I’ve gathered my recommended options available in Australia below, from portable jugs to whole-home systems, so you can find a starting point that suits your home.

JUGS

A filter jug is an easy place to start if you rent, have limited bench space or want filtered drinking water without installation. Check the capacity, replacement cartridge cost and the contaminants each model is tested to reduce.

GRAVITY FED CERAMIC COUNTERTOP

These ceramic systems sit on the bench and filter water without electricity or plumbing. They suit households that want a larger supply of drinking water, with a vessel that can become part of the kitchen rather than something hidden away.

BENCHTOP STAINLESS STEEL & GLASS

Benchtop systems offer more capacity than a jug while remaining portable. Stainless steel and glass are appealing choices if you prefer to limit plastic contact with your drinking water; compare the filter cartridges as well as the outer vessel.

UNDERSINK WATER FILTERS

An undersink filter keeps the bench clear and makes filtered water available straight from a dedicated tap or compatible mixer. The best setup depends on your water supply, what you want to reduce and how much space you have beneath the sink.

UNDERSINK REVERSE OSMOSIS (RO)

Reverse osmosis is an option when you want broad contaminant reduction, including fluoride. It needs more space and maintenance than a standard undersink filter, so check the system’s water use, cartridge schedule and whether it includes remineralisation.

WHOLE HOME

A whole-home system treats water as it enters the house, covering taps, showers and appliances. The right configuration depends on whether you use town, tank or bore water and what your water testing shows. I use a Hello Water system in my own home.

SHOWER & BATH

Shower and bath filters can be a practical choice when a whole-home system isn’t possible. Check what the cartridge is designed to reduce, how often it needs replacing and whether the fitting works with your particular shower or bath tap.

The best water filter is one that addresses your water and fits the way your family lives.

Start with what matters most to you, check the system’s testing and ongoing filter costs, and remember that even a small change can become part of a healthier daily routine.
